Students Propose Research Projects to NASA
On August 5, SSMV sophomores presented research proposals to NASA and Arizona State University via videoconference in hopes of acquiring their own unique image from the Mars Odyssey Orbiter.
The students worked in groups to develop a research question related to the geological development of Mars. Students were interested in looking at the development of volcanoes in the Tharsis Region, the formation of wind streaks at various altitudes, and determining ancient atmospheric composition using cratering rates.
Each student group proposed the acquisition of a satellite photograph of the Martian landscape using the THEMIS camera onboard Odyssey to better understand their question. They will present their findings to a group of NASA scientists in the coming months.
